Recent Work - Mixed Media
My work focuses on casas abandonadas/abandoned buildings. A combination of collage and photo transfer are my preferred media. The impact of collage is more powerful and evocative for me than pure painting and has lead me into more inventive work. I dye transparent papers and work around an initial photo aiming at integration and invention. I also make short piano compositions to accompany videos I make based on my mixed media artworks.
While exploring some old docks in Lisbon I discovered an array of old fishing boats which had been placed on the queue as if in an open air exhibition. This one was really a reject but still beautiful.
A mixed media piece on wood 43 × 83cm framed (no glass) inspired by old boats sitting on the Marvila Docks in Lisbon as if they are historic relics in an open museum. I have used a mixture of photography, collage, drawing and paint.
A second 3D model inspired by an abandoned building which I ‘trespassed’, made up of photography, collage, textured materials to convey the interior space 22×27×14cm. Wall hung or free standing.

Digital printing on transparent acrylic sheets hung in a mobile which is an interpretation of one of my ‘abandoned houses´ in Portugal. The photos and 2 artworks included (fish is an etching, other artwork is a collage) capture the time and place of this work.

Mixed media on wood. This is a typical street in Santos an area of Lisbon with narrow streets and a few abandoned buildings like this one. The fish which is an etching superimposed is I feel appropriate for a city on the water and very connected to fishing and the sea.

While exploring old docks in Lisbon I discovered an array of old fishing boats no longer used placed on the docks almost like an exhibition. There’s a sense of honouring the vessels no longer in use. This one struck my eye and I liked the idea of including the background. A mixed media collage of photography, paper, netting, watercolour and drawing on wood.

44 × 84 cm framed (no glass). Mixed media on wood. Inspired by a walk on the Lisbon docks where I spied a seemingly random display of old boats mostly ruined and now out of use. It felt like an exhibition of a fishing boat graveyard.

Mixed media collage on wood inspired by details of an old abandoned and burnt out Renaissance Chateau in Nérac France. These windows gave on to the spoilage inside.

Mixed media on wood. This is view through a shed door on the chateau’s land looking at the main courtyard with kids playing. I was struck by the ruinous Renaissance structures and the effect of glimpsing some life and promise of rebuilding this historic place.

From my ‘abandoned buildings’ series I explore an old summer home in Colares soon to be knocked down and replaced by Continente a hypermarket. I felt sad about the destruction of an architectural building of historic interest but the commercial forces came into play again. Mixed media on wood 40×40cm (framed 42×42cm) 2026
